Far As I Can Remember, with Nancy Rekow Eagle Harbor Books Sunday June 27th, 3 PM

Minnie Rose Lovgreen ran a successful dairy farm here on Bainbridge Island for 30 years.  Originally from an English farm family, Minnie Rose had endless, vivid, fascinating, very detailed stories to tell of her life--including the fact that she and her brother had tickets on the Titanic, but because that sailing was delayed, came across on an earlier boat!

And how fortunate for us all!  Otherwise her 2 books (tape-recorded by Nancy Rekow when she was dying of cancer) would not exist and folks wouldn't have access to her entertaining but practical stories:  Minnie Rose Lovgreen's Recipe For Raising Chickens and Far As I Can Remember: Minnie Rose's Life Story.

Bainbridge Island author and long time resident, Nancy Rekow met Minnie Rose Lovgreen, in 1964, after Nancy bought an old dairy farm on the island.  Nancy also had a distinguished career as a poetry teacher here on Bainbridge Island.

Work Song, with Ivan Doig, Eagle Harbor Books Wednesday June 30th 7:30 PM

An award-winning and beloved novelist of the American West spins the further adventures of a favorite character, in one of his richest historical settings yet.

"If America was a melting pot, Butte would be its boiling point," observes Morrie Morgan, the itinerant teacher, walking encyclopedia, and inveterate charmer last seen leaving a one-room schoolhouse in Marias Coulee, the stage he stole in Ivan Doig's 2006 The Whistling Season. A decade later, Morrie is back in Montana, as the beguiling narrator of Work Song.

"The most tumultuous, quirky, and fascinating city in the American West of the last century has finally found a storyteller equal to its stories. ... Ivan Doig brings to life the core of humanity, and a hell of cast, amidst the shadows and sorrows of Butte, Montana -- a city that could say it never slept well before New York made a similar claim."-Tim Egan, author of The Last Hard Time and The Big Burn

The Baseball Fan's Bucket List, with Robert Santelli, Eagle Harbor Books Thursday July 1st 7:30 PM

No sport’s fans are more in touch with the history and ephemera of their game than baseball fans. Hitting the sweet spot of our national pastime, The Baseball Fan’s Bucket List presents a list of 162 “absolute must” things to do, see, get, and experience before you kick the bucket. Entries range from visiting Elysian Fields in Hoboken, NJ (site of the first pro baseball game), to starting a baseball card collection; experiencing Opening Day; attending your favorite team’s Fantasy Camp; reading classic books like Ball Four, and much more! Each entry includes interesting facts, entertaining trivia, and practical information about the activity, item, or travel destination. With today’s tabloid stories of steroid abuse and off-the-field shenanigans encroaching on baseball’s idyllic charm, this unique guidebook encourages readers to celebrate all that’s good about being a fan.

Bainbridge Island author Robert Santelli’s first passion is baseball, although he is better known as the New York Times bestselling author of The Bob Dylan Scrapbook and Greetings from E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, among other music titles. He has also written articles for Memories and Dreams, the magazine of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He is the Executive Director of the Grammy® Museum in Los Angeles, and was previously the VP of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He divides his time between Los Angeles and Bainbridge Island.

Longbourn's Unexpected Matchmaker, with Emma Hox, Eagle Harbor Books Thursday July 8th, 7:30 PM

Emma Hox has always been an avid fan of Jane Austen’s novels. Although her favorite novel, she has been disappointed in Pride and Prejudice’s Mr. Bennet. Longbourn's Unexpected Matchmaker gives the witty father of Elizabeth Bennet the personality Emma always envisioned he should truly have.
Emma is a member of the Jane Austen Society and a Jane Austen writer’s guild. She speaks to youth groups about becoming the women they dream of being, using the Jane Austen Heroines as examples.  She teaches the young women that each one of them has strengths and weaknesses and shows them how to learn and grow with confidence.

KIDS SUMMER BOOK CLUB

We are once again having  FREE summer book club for kids. What FREE means is kids come with their parents to this first meeting given you will be reading advanced copies of books. Parents need to review the content of the book for their children as many of these books are new and the staff here has not read them. Kids can pick 1-2 books at a time, then bring them back any time to pick other books. If they liked the book, we'd like a quick review. They didn't like it we want to know that too.

Congratulations to Anjali Banerjee on the release of her newest middle-grade novel Seaglass Summer. In SEAGLASS SUMMER, 11-year-old Poppy Ray, an aspiring veterinarian, spends the summer with her Indian uncle at his animal clinic on a Pacific Northwest island.

Poppy is in for big surprises. She loves tending to the dogs, cats, and even a bird, and she discovers the fun of newborn puppies and the satisfaction of doing a good job. But she learns that there's more to caring for animals than the stethoscope and cotton swabs in her Deluxe Veterinarian First-Aid Kit. She's not prepared for quirky pet owners, gross stuff, or scary emergencies. With help from a boy named Hawk, a chunk of seaglass, and a touch of intuition, Poppy gains a deeper understanding of the pain and joy of working with animals.
