CALLING ALL CRAFTERS OF LIMERICKS!

3RD ANNUAL ISLAND LIMERICK CONTEST

It's time once again to sharpen your wit and gather up your collection of rhymes. Our third annual bookstore limerick contest looms on the horizon. Last year's contest was a big success, culminating in a reading by the winners and honorable mentions. We even published a booklet of standout verse.

As before, the rules are simple: all are invited to enter and there is no limit to the number of entries you may submit. Limericks must include a Bainbridge place name. Get your limericks to Eagle Harbor Books however you can but please include your email address with your submission.  Again there will be prizes and no end of fame. The deadline for submissions is April 1st.

For an inspirational jump-start, here's a limerick  Ann wrote for the Eagle harbor bookstore's 40th Birthday:

Dear Readers, may we be so bold,
You've hundreds of tales to be told,
And here at the store
We are sure there'll be more
Since now we are forty years old.

Warship Under Sail:
The USS Decatur in the Pacific West
by Lorraine McConaghy
March 11, Thursday, 7:30 pm Eagle Harbor Books

Expert on regional history and a historian at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, Lorraine McConaghy visits to discuss her book, which traces the warship USS Decatur's five-year tour in the mid-1850s, including stops in Honolulu, San Francisco, and Central America as well as Puget Sound.

Using a rich record of logbooks, medical and punishment records, correspondence, personal journals, and drawings, McConaghy presents the ship and its crew in a vigorous, keenly rendered case study that illuminates the forces shaping America's antebellum navy and foreign policy in the Pacific. Her book includes a Seattle war story that contested American treaties and settlements.

Chicken Scratches:
Poultry Poetry & Rooster Rhymes
by Lynn Brunelle, Scott Menchin,  & George Shannon
March 13, Saturday, 11 am Eagle Harbor Books

Our very own Children's author (and the creator of our extraordinary store snow man,) the wonderfully prolific George Shannon, pairs up with another Bainbridge kids' author, Lynn Brunelle, to debut their new book.

One day two summers ago, the two of them challenged each other to see who could write more silly chicken poems, both proclaiming, "Chickens today, tomorrow the world!"  The result is as adorably absurd as chickens themselves, laugh-out-loud poultry poems that will appeal to anyone with a fowl sense of humor!

Come laugh, cluck, nibble, and crow with them and The Poultry Players as they celebrate. And stay tuned for ways YOU can become one of The Poultry Players and part of the show!

Recommended by Mary:
I fairly cackled with delight at the first poem and all the way through this fine variety of rhymes from scientific to slightly risque-you should see the sumo wrestler chicken! This is a perfect book for spring and will be more welcome than a peep or chocolate bunny in Easter baskets everywhere.

Travel as a
Political Act

Monday, March 15
North Kitsap Community Auditorium
7pm
Free Admission to Active Duty Military and High School Students with ID.

Noted television traveler and author Rick Steves will come to Kitsap County March 15 to discuss Travel as a Political Act, specifically his visit to Iran and the resulting documentary about travel to one of the world's hot spots.

Steves, an Edmonds resident, is one of the rare people who can talk first-hand about conditions in Iran and the mood of Iranians toward the United States. He is an engaging speaker who will force you to think through your perceptions and your misconceptions about a country that gives the United States one of its most difficult foreign relations challenges.

Steves is an advocate of independent travel. Through his books and television series, he encourages Americans to become what he calls "temporary locals" and to discover destinations away from popular tourist routes.

Steves' presentation is a fundraiser for the Kitsap Regional Library Foundation. Tickets ($25) each are available online.

Field's End Writers' Roundtable  7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Avenue Author Anthony Flacco discusses the topic "From the Screen in Your Mind to the Page in Your Hands" on March 16

In addition to his own writing, he has served as freelance editor for books and book proposals that have recently sold to Hay House, Vanderwyck and Burnham, Rodale Press and Lyons Press.

Flacco's background as a trained stage actor provides the basis for his ability to empathize with a wide cross section of personalities. His screenwriting experience is also of great use in telling narrative stories that are visually compelling, whether for the screen of a reader's imagination, or for the movie or television screen. In addition to his books, he has worked as a screenwriter for the Touchstone Pictures Division and has written a documentary about crime for the Discovery Channel
